 Polyolefines, due to low prices and acceptable properties are considered as a high consumption polymeric family. But the results have shown that these polymers have low UV resistance and therefore it is highly recommended to stabilize them against to the UV light. This article reviews the effects of different carbon black on the UV stability of polyolefines. The results show that the several fundamental carbon black properties which influence the final plastic compound’s properties include: particle size distribution, pore size distribution, surface activity distribution and aggregate size distribution. The researches recommend that the P-type carbon black is most excellent for UV protection of polyethylene pipes. The primary particle size and the total ash content of this carbon black are lower than 25 nm and 0.1% respectively. These specifications are required for pressure pipe application to meet the industry standards across the world.The best loading of carbon black to impart optimum UV protection in polyolefines varies between 2 and 3%. It should be noted that these carbon black levels correspond to 4 to 7.5% masterbatch, as typical carbon black loading in the masterbatch is about 40%.

The results show that the combination of carbon black with antioxidant and Hindered Amine Light Stabilizers (HALS) reveal a good stabilization against to UV light.
